Great Revelin

The Revelin Tower, built in 1485, stands as a prominent historical feature of Korčula, guarding the area between the Arsenal and the Land Gate Tower. This fortification is an essential part of the town’s defensive system, reflecting the growing significance of Korčula during the time of the Venetian Republic.

The Arsenal, constructed in 1572, was built at a time when Korčula’s strategic location made it increasingly important to Venice. In the 18th century, the island served as a wintering base for the Venetian fleet, further emphasising its military and commercial significance within the Republic. The Arsenal’s construction not only reinforced Korčula’s defences but also marked a period of economic and military growth on the island.

Above the entrance to the Land Gate, two remarkable symbols commemorate significant aspects of Korčula’s rich history. A bas-relief featuring the winged lion of St. Mark, the emblem of the Venetian Republic, serves as a reminder of Venetian rule over the island. Adjacent to this is a stone tablet celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the coronation of Tomislav, the first Croatian king, marking the island’s connection to the broader Croatian historical narrative.

Together, these structures and symbols provide a fascinating glimpse into Korčula’s layered past, from its strategic military importance under Venetian rule to its deeper connections to Croatian heritage.
